Guatemala Update: Group comes today!

Direct from Guatemala, Kelly shares updates and prepares for the group’s arrival!

Yesterday I joined Laura from Open Windows to explore La Azotea Cultural Center and Los Gigantes Fair Trade Store in the morning. We were thoroughly energized at some of the new products we saw being made in Guatemala – huge improvements from a few years ago!

I then visited Ivet at our hotel and caught up on world politics – we both got a laugh out of the news Guatemala has been making. The first lady has just divorced her husband (the current president) so that she can run for the office in September. Talk about women’s empowerment!

I spent some time with Elke, our ground operator, to finalize our itinerary at her office near La Merced Church. From there, it was off to Abriendo Opportunidades, a Population Council Project in Guatemala. We explored ideas of training the young women who have graduated from their leadership training academies in handicrafts and small business development. Any design students interested in playing a role, let me know! Lots of potential for collaboration with TVE!!

The group arrives today – let the trip officially begin!
