Partner Village: Mbita, located on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Relationship: TVC has been working with the community in Mbita since 2007. We have implemented a small business program business, motorbike taxi company, chicken coop, soap making company, tailoring company, and clean water business. We opened a primary school in 2011 and currently have 5 classrooms, a kitchen and dining hall, administrative block, playground, latrines, and clean water system. We have been building houses for the widows in the community also complete with clean water systems. The new Gary Rowe Community Center was unveiled in 2014 and will eventually house a cyber café, conference center, tailoring center, and administrative center for the community.

Current Needs: TVC would like to secure funding to build 3 additional classrooms this year complete with desks, chairs, books, and chalkboard. We would like to provide funding for better kitchen equipment for the women who volunteer to cook for the children each day. We would like to also start a fund to help pay the teacher’s salaries and provide for new uniforms for the children when needed. We would love to jumpstart the cyber café with the purchase of laptops, desktops, printers, a copier, and wifi installation.

Partner Village: Nakuru, located in the areas surrounding Lake Nakuru National Park

Relationship: TVC has been working with the community in Nakuru since 2007. In 2009, after the election violence, we partnered with The Lake Nakuru Lodge to raise funds and build over 200 homes for locally displaced persons. These homes are still in use and provide safety and shelter to those still looking for permanent resettlement. We have started two women’s handicraft projects in Mwariki – Heart to Heart Women’s Cooperative and Black Sheep. We have implemented a community tourism program including horseback safaris, village walks, fair trade demonstrations, and education on small business projects. In 2012, we opened the first Village Experience Medical Clinic in an area called Mbaaruk. We handed this over to the Ministry of Health in 2013 and continue to provide support in terms of  equipment and medicines. A BUV (basic utility vehicle) arrived to the clinic in the Spring of 2014 to serve as an ambulance. We began construction on Rhino Secondary School in 2013. We currently have 3 classrooms there.

Current Needs: TVC would like to add 2 more classrooms, a kitchen and dining hall, and an administrative block to Rhino Secondary School this year. There is a waiting list for children to attend the school and more classrooms are desperately needed. We would like to make plans for a maternity ward at the medical clinic in the next year so that women in the village have access to good pre and postnatal care.

Kitchen/Dining Hall: $15,000

Administrative Block: $12,000

Partner Village: Maralal (Samburu Tribe) and Narok (Masai Mara Tribe),Kenya

Relationship: This is a new project for TVC. We met with many groups working in the field of FGM (female genital mutilation) and Early Forced Marriages to determine the best partners to make a difference on this issue. Even though FGM is outlawed in Kenya, many young girls are still being forced into the procedure and suffering debilitating side effects, including death.

Current Needs: Our goal is to build a new rescue center, a new dorm, and create Alternative Rites of Passage Programs for both communities to help young girls escape FGM and move on with their education in a safe environment.

Rescue Center Construction: $80,000 each

New Dorm Construction: $50,000 each

Alternative Rites of Passage Program: $15,000 each
